Every state in the US has a Department of Motor Vehicles which sets and enforces the laws of the road. They also manage the certification and training of driving instructors. Just like with driving laws, every state has separate standards you need to meet in order to become recognized and registered as a driving instructor. Check with any local DMV learn the specified standards for where you live.
Generally speaking, if you’re ready to teach driving, you must fulfill the following requirements:
1. You must have graduated high school, and will need to provide proof via a diploma or other qualified document. Many states will accept the GED (General Education Development) certificate, but you’ll need to check with your local DMV. A photocopy of either the certificate or diploma to testify your achievement will almost certainly be required along with your application to the DMV.
2. Successfully finish a course approved by the department. This training ordinarily implies somewhere between 30 to 40 hrs of classroom and behind the wheel time. In most states, this training most be completed in person and cannot be completed online.
3. Within a certain number of tries (typically 2 or 3) complete a written driving instructor exam that the DMV mandates.
This assessment typically will incorporate proving that you have:
-An in depth understanding of all major traffic regulations and laws.
-A grasp of and an ability to explain the specific strategies of defensive driving maneuvers.
-An understanding of and skill set needed to correctly drive a car or truck in both good and bad driving conditions. You should be more than competent at driving in the adverse conditions specific to your state (snow in the rocky mountains, rain in the northwest etc.)
-The capacity to educate individuals in the safe and secure operation of a motor vehicle.
4. Be able to safely and effectively operate a motor vehicle while articulating how to do so to teenagers. This includes passing an eye test (using corrective lenses or contacts is accepted, but your approved glasses should be used in the course of the examination), and understanding both manual and automatic transmission driving techniques. You also need to be proficient in English.
5. Have a valid license to drive under the state in which you will end up teaching. That license needs to be type appropriate for the type of auto in which the instruction will be given. To teach a motorcycle driving course, you ought to produce a legal motorcycle license etc. Many states will not permit you to to be a driving instructor unless your license is FROM THAT STATE.
6. You cannot be on probation to the state as a negligent operator of motor vehicles. You usually cannot have any past due tickets or citations that are unpaid, nor can you have a suspended or revoked license. Several states won’t permit you to make yourself a driving teacher if you have previously been arrested for driving while intoxicated or driving under the influence. There are usually no exceptions.
7. You must have no ‘failure to appear in courts’ listed on your record. Several sections of the country do not allow you to make yourself a driving instructor with any citations in your driving record other than basic traffic or parking records
8. You must be at least 18 years old, numerous sections of the country will demand that you be at least twenty one years of age.
9. You need to prove that you have recently received a health exam from a licensed doctor, and send in a voluntary worksheet bringing to notice your medical history and other related information.
10. You must reveal any criminal activity in your permanent record, much of which, in reality, is going to make you ineligible to become a driving instructor. So that you can educate the youth from your state in safe driving, it is critical that you pass the qualifications check. A number of counties will require a criminal check and some will not.
